How to get on the ballot

The Libertarian Party is the only recognized minor party in Pennsylvania. Minor parties in Pennsylvania have a different set of rules to follow to get their candidates on the ballot than the major parties.
  1. We are not permitted to run candidates in the taxpayer-funded primary election. We may petition to get our candidates on the general election ballot.
  2. All candidates from any party must petition to get their names placed on the ballot. For the primary election, candidates must obtain these from voters in their own party. As a minor party candidate petitioning for general election ballot access, we may obtain signatures from voters with any or no party affiliation.
  3. The petitions needed to obtain ballot access are available at pre-designated dates from the Director of Elections at the Blair County Courthouse, and are due back at specified dates. The date for Libertarian candidates to obtain their petition falls after that of the candidates competing in the primaries.
  4. The number of signatures needed to get a Libertarian on the ballot is different from the major parties. The number we are required to get is based on a percentage of the votes obtained from the highest vote getter in the most recent like election. The Director of Elections is responsible for determining what that number is for each office.
  5. There is a filing fee required with your completed petition, although a recent Pennsylvania court ruling stated that candidates cannot be denied ballot access based on an inability to pay.
